Is there an acceptable translation of "für's Morgen" in the sense of "good morning" in German?
In many English-speaking countries (including Germany) "good morning" is a phrase often used on the start of a conversation, as a greeting, after you've been in a closed room for a long time. One might say "für's Morgen" or "good morning".
The phrase has the same meaning. It is informal and slightly more polite than "Guten Tag" (good day). It is probably not used all that often (if at all) in German as it is for the most part used when there's a greeting involved.
Is there a term for the use of "für's Morgen" for this purpose?
Is it more common or usual in Germany than in the US?
Depending on the region of the country, it might also be tod. in the sense of 'good evening' or good afternoon. This is more polite than "Guten Tag". But most people only say this when they see someone walking through the streets or passing by in front of a shop.
It is a kind of sentence, but not necessarily used in a friendly situation. In my experience, it is more often used in a business context:
Bitte schönstes Morgen.
It might be also used for a good afternoon.
Some people actually use "Tod für den Morgen" or "Tod für heute Morgen" to greet people and people frequently use this "phrase".
It is no longer a very common thing to say, but it is good to know that it is not just something weird.
